We have just spent a fantastic week in Thurslestone, Devon with 3 families including lots of teenagers!! It was Britain at it’s best. We love spending a week in Britain every summer but I was worried about the weather, whether the kids would get bored, the drive etc etc. The weather was great, the teenagers loved the beach and the drive was traffic free…I know…lucky!
We were staying in a friend’s house, which was 1 minute’s walk to Thurlestone beach and easy reach to others like Bantham Bay and Hope Cove. We played rounder’s on the beach, which was hotly contested, but the adults lost! I also have a sprained leg having raced to first post to avoid being stumped out by my goddaughter. We also boogey boarded, had fish and chips and wine at sunset and even tried to do some star spotting. Apparently Ginger Spice was staying in the big house on the hill (helicopter outside) and Tamara Beckworth’s family have a house near by.
Salcombe was a popular visit for the teenagers. The birthplace of Jack Wills although the tiniest shop I have seen! Luckily no pressure tactics to buy as more interested on getting to the harbor. The kids wondered off on their own, Dad’s sat in the pub listening to the Test Match and the Mum’s happily shopped!
The sailing at Salcombe is really fun and accessible. You can hire boats or learn to sail so easily. The sailing community is thriving and one day we would love to make a Blazer Bear sailor! One of the shops, Quba, www.Quba.com recycles sails into all sorts of products from bags and clothing to home wares. We would love to build a bear from recycled sail material or even using sporting memorabilia to create a unique gift.
We had a fantastic lunch at Island Street www.islandstreet.co.uk which was a real hit. Jugs of Pimms and delicious food went down a treat. I know the kids would have been really keen to go in the evening as they had live music and a very cool vibe…next time! Going back to our haven at Thurlestone was fantastic after a busy day, eating at The Village Inn and playing games on the terrace with a glow from the day’s sun.
The kids definitely want to go back and so do we. I had thought the lack of bars and nightclubs that the resorts abroad offer would mean we would have grumpy teenagers who would crave a holiday without the parents. Funnily enough…it turned out to be quite the opposite!
Friends since their first children were born, Pru and Kathy are two mums whose children are now at secondary school. As a special keepsake Pru made each of her children a teddy bear out of their old school Blazers. Kathy loved the concept so they joined forces and Blazer Bear. was born. Find out more
