This week we celebrated Australian Day in the Blazer Bear workshop, as we are busy making our keepsake bears! One of us is a native Australian but we both have close family living in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne! As they are sweltering in their summer sunshine we can’t help get a little wistful for family BBQ’s, days on the beach and the general outdoor life. Currently we are looking at wind, rain and even hail outside the workshop window!
Australia Day historically commemorates the arrival of the first British Fleet to arrive at Sydney Cove. Nowadays it is more a day of celebration of unity reflecting the diverse society and landscape of Australia. Families and communities around the country celebrate the day and it is the larges annual civic event. It is also marked by the presentation of the Australian of the Year Awards on the Eve of Australia Day.
This week we have finished another keepsake bear for Australia. It is made from a gorgeous blue and green tartan which was a school pinafore dress. We have made several for schools in Australia, some of the uniform from leavers last year and some from 35 years ago! We have also made a variety of handmade bears from treasured clothing such as a ball dress and a Mother of the Bride jacket.
We were quite tempted to make a keepsake bear from the Australian Flag….a memento to be brought out on family days! A project we will do when we have a little more time on our hands! We made some special Union Jack ones to celebrate the Jubilee and Olympics in 2012.
We are currently splitting our time between completing orders and getting our new workshop organized! We are all VERY excited! The doors and windows will be fitted this week and then once complete it is the fun bit…fitting our workshop.
We have quite a bit on our wish list such as mounted rolls to orgainse our lining and ribbons etc. and we are planning the workstations, lighting and our dispatch area. We have a little kitchen for our much needed tea and cake or whatever yummy treats takes our fancy that week! We will also be able to store all our display bears, which we take with us to all the fairs and events.
So although we have really enjoyed our first little workshop, it is time for us and our keepsake bears to make a move and we can’t wait for the extra space.!
Friends since their first children were born, Pru and Kathy are two mums whose children are now at secondary school. As a special keepsake Pru made each of her children a teddy bear out of their old school Blazers. Kathy loved the concept so they joined forces and Blazer Bear. was born. Find out more
