Summer of Sport

Posted on July 16, 2013 By Blazer Bear

This is turning out to be another fantastic summer of sport!

First the Lions win in Australia! A fantastic match, which we watched on holiday in Portugal. It started off with a few gathered around the television but by the time the final whistle was blown, a crowd of rugby loving fans were cheering and celebrating. The Lions tour is a real even and last year we built a bear for a formed British Lions player from his shirts. It was a special and unique gift from his wife to celebrate his birthday and successes with the Lions in the fantastic tours in the 1970’s! We even stitched his number to the back…no 7!

We then raced back from the airport from our week’s holiday with Radio 5 Live giving us fantastic coverage of Murray in the final! We got back and all sat glued to the last set. We love Wimbledon and had created a Wimbledon Bear to take pride of place at the Wimbledon Village Fair. It was a stressful watch and I had to take several exits from the room, as I couldn’t quite cope with the suspense! The relief when he won was felt across Britain! A bottle of Pimms was then opened in his honour, a fantastic way to finish our holiday.

Then we had the first Ashes test. Pru is Australian and we have family in Sydney so there is always good rivalry when the Ashes are played. My husband had the perfect weekend. Gorgeous weather, relaxing in the garden, listening to cricket on Radio 5 Live. I enjoy cricket but have to say get really involved when the Ashes are on. The last day seemed a foregone conclusion, but yet again turned out to be a nail biter! But victory was ours making it a great start and we can’t wait until the second test. We are currently making two bears for a professional cricketer from two different counties that he has played for. Each a different colour and including the cable knit jumper as ears and paws.

Finally, Chris Froome, can he win the Tour de France? It would be amazing to have a second victorious year. We would love to make a bear from a cycling team shirt…our first!  We have made so many bears from different sporting memorabilia to date, whether rowing, rugby, football or riding. We relish taking on new challenges and can create a bear from even the most unexpected pieces of special clothing. Wonder what our next challenge will be….

How did it start?

tplFriends since their first children were born, Pru and Kathy are two mums whose children are now at secondary school. As a special keepsake Pru made each of her children a teddy bear out of their old school Blazers. Kathy loved the concept so they joined forces and Blazer Bear. was born.  Find out more

How does it work?

Whether it be a blazer, school uniform, rugby shirts, precious clothing babygros, the list is endless. Everything is lovingly handcrafted entirely from what you give us. If it is a group school order you are after, we can often source the fabrics and even incorporate a school emblem Find out
