Tartan Blazer Bears

Posted on May 3, 2013 By Blazer Bear

There is something very attractive about tartan fabric. Being made from alternating coloured threads woven at right angles to each other this forms distinctive diagonal lines where different colours cross, resulting in an eye-catching appearance of new colours blended from the original ones.

One of the very first tartan Blazer Bears we made was for a lovely couple who had a family tartan ‘Graham Mentieth’ kilt and wanted a bear made for their sons 40th birthday; being a special birthday they wanted a unique present. He was great fun to make and we were so delighted that they liked him enough to order a second ‘Graham’ for their grandson. Each kilt was slightly different but never- the- less resulted in 2 handsome Bears. We have just delivered ‘Graham The Second’ and hope their Grandson likes him!

Although Tartan Blazer Bears are possibly the most difficult to make, here at Blazer Bear we like a challenge! As tartan is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in sometimes many colours, we are very particular about all the vertical and horizontal stripes matching up – which can be tricky when we have a small school kilt! But we haven’t been defeated yet!

We do a number of tartan Blazer Bears as many school uniforms involve the girls wearing kilts. We were given a particularly attractive kilt from Coombe Bank School in Sevenoaks yesterday. It is a mix of lovely blues with a beautiful green horizontal and vertical stripe running through it. The prep school girls wear a dear little white blouse with puffed sleeves and a blue piping around the Peter Pan collar. We are hoping to use this blouse in the paws.

However it is not only school kilts and family tartan kilts that we have made Blazer Bears for. Just before Christmas a customer supplied a metre of fabric of their family tartan – it had been sitting in the cupboard for years, and as she said making a Blazer Bear from it was a perfect way to showcase the lovely tartan.

Interestingly we have made a Bear from the popular Black Watch tartan – but we are yet to make a Blazer Bear from the equally popular and gorgeous red based Royal Stewart tartan. That tartan really would make a good-looking Bear; how we’d love to make one!

How did it start?

tplFriends since their first children were born, Pru and Kathy are two mums whose children are now at secondary school. As a special keepsake Pru made each of her children a teddy bear out of their old school Blazers. Kathy loved the concept so they joined forces and Blazer Bear. was born.  Find out more

How does it work?

Whether it be a blazer, school uniform, rugby shirts, precious clothing babygros, the list is endless. Everything is lovingly handcrafted entirely from what you give us. If it is a group school order you are after, we can often source the fabrics and even incorporate a school emblem Find out
