Most people have grown up with the memory of a much loved teddy bear or similar keepsake. In our workshop we all have very fond memories of our first special bear. They all vary hugely from floppy much stroked pink ones to traditional blond ones with rather crunchy wood wool stuffing. Mine was grey with red spottied ears but I loved it dearly. Unfortunately one day I left it a hotel room bed where it was swept up with the laundry never to be seen again. Heartbreaking! I would have loved to have my teddy bear now as it is something so synomonous with my childhood. My sister was rather clever and bought several copies of her daughters beloved bear…granted it was a small and cheap example…which has proved invaluable over the years if not just for the chance to wash it!! There are some great sites on Twitter eg @lostteddybear where you can post pictures and details of precious teddies. It is so heartwarming to hear the success stories when the little owners are reunited with their precious bears!
The fascination and love of bears dates back to the story of Goldilocks in 1834 but it was not until 1902 that the idea of the ‘Teddy’ bear came into existence. On a hunting trip in Mississippi President Theodore Roosevelt had had very little success so his party captured a bear cub and tied it to a tree. When Roosevelt arrived he refused to shoot the bear…it was unsportsmanlike. The Washington post published a cartoon which triggered a huge teddy bear craze in the States. Morris & Rose a shop in New York made a plush toy bear to place in the window named after the President…’’Teddy’s Bear’’. The idea of a toy bear took off.
At the same time Richard Steiff in Germany was working for his aunt making soft toys. He designed a teddy bear based on bears he saw in the zoo. The first jointed bear was produced in 1902 and an American buyer ordered 3000 to be shipped to America. Europe too a little longer to catch the craze!
Initially the childrens keepsake teddy bears were created to look more like real bears with extended snouts and beady eyes. However nowadays they have larger eyes and smaller noses to enhance their cuteness. When we came up with the design for our keepsake bears we wanted them to look sweet but also not too childish. They are keepsakes for such varied ages from 10 to 80 years old so has to appeal to all ages. These Aldro Bears are all unique, have individual badges added and we think they make wonderful keepsake bears
Today the teddy bears is a firm favourite and is more than simply a child’s toy. Many adults collect teddy bears for both sentimental reasons and financial investment. With our keepsake bears we aim to produce a wonderful keepsake for years and generations to come. They are truly personal and a little bit of history. The memories that our Blazer Bears impart make them very precious keepsakes. We know how important each piece of material, badge, tie or any of the memorabilia sent to us is. We take great care to create a handmade bespoke bear that will be treasured by the whole family.
