The Courier feature on the Tunbridge Wells FC Bear

Posted on May 12, 2013 By Blazer Bear

We decided to build a bear as a unique gift for Tunbridge Wells Football Club to celebrate their amazing success at reaching Wembley!  This is the article that was featured in the Courier. We feel very honoured that the bear currently resides in the clubs trophy cabinet.

MASCOT BEAR SIMPLY A BEAR NECESSITY

SPELDHURST teddy bear makers Pru Wright and Kathy Moir have come up with a special Tunbridge Wells FC mascot to show their support for the team.

“It’s a fantastic achievement and, as local people, we wanted to join in the fun,” said Mrs Wright, of Etherington Hill, who took apart a club shirt to make the unique bear.

The pair, who have made more than 300 teddies since they started Blazer Bear last year, use everything from old school uniforms and sports gear to club ties and army kit to create individual mementoes.

“It all started when my own four children were leaving primary school,” said Mrs Wright, 45, who worked in the City after leaving her native Australia. “I used their battered old blazers to make bears for each of them as a surprise. They were delighted, and when their friends saw them, they wanted them too. Kathy persuaded me that the idea could take off and we decided to give it a go.”

She added: “The beauty of it is that we can make a bear from whatever people have. Someone came with a handful of ties after his father died, and we’ve also made them from tiny baby clothes and a 1940s RAF jacket. Compared to that, making this bear was pretty straightforward.”

How did it start?

tplFriends since their first children were born, Pru and Kathy are two mums whose children are now at secondary school. As a special keepsake Pru made each of her children a teddy bear out of their old school Blazers. Kathy loved the concept so they joined forces and Blazer Bear. was born.  Find out more

How does it work?
